Evolution
In 1891, Dr. Still opened the first School of Osteopathic Medicine,
with just three patients, in Missouri. Less than 30 years later,
during World War I, the first osteopathic school was founded
in this country.
In 1993, the Osteopath’s Act made osteopathy the first
complementary medical therapy to be fully regulated by law.
Chiropractors then began the process of regulation themselves
and other disciplines have subsequently followed. Patients are
now given the same assurance of safety, training and quality
that they would expect from any other medical doctor or dentist.
In 2008, it is estimated that back pain alone is found to strike
as many as four out of every five people. Currently, this results
in at least 4.9 million days off work each year and represents
the largest single cause of sickness absence in the UK today.
