Arthritis & Fibromyalgia

Arthritis means the inflammation of a joint. Two of the main types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The former is, broadly speaking, due to wear and tear and the latter a rheumatological disease in its own right. All types lead to painful restricted joints and thence stiff or swollen muscles. These are the bread and butter of an osteopath's work.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that causes fatigue, pain in the muscles and ligaments and tender areas in certain points of the body. It is often due to the combination of a number of factors including stress, previous over-exertion, inappropriate nutrition or viral illness. It tends to resolve slowly and treatment is a great help in speeding this up as well as easing the symptoms and improving the quality of life of patients while they recover. It is also a great help to patients if energy levels can be boosted and regular sleep patterns established.
